Human Ecology: Programs of Study: M.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences
General Information:
- Master of Science Degree
- Three concentrations offered:
- Consumer Sciences
- Family & Child Development
- Family & Consumer Sciences Education (teacher certification required)
- All FCS graduate-level (500-level) courses are offered online, as are several HEC graduate-level courses (including HEC 504 and HEC 546).
- Degree program is 30 hours (thesis option) or 39 hours (non-thesis option)
- All students complete individual research/ education/ development project in the form of a thesis or 1 quarter project (non-thesis option)
- Specialized courses offered evenings and weekends to accommodate employed graduate students
- Graduate assistantships and scholarships available. Applications are typically available in January of each year. Interested students should apply early.
Course Requirements:
- Core requirements for all concentrations
- Human Ecology 504: Research Methodology (3 hours)
- Human Ecology 546: Microcomputer Applications of Research (3 hours)
- Statistics 402: Introduction to Statistics (3 hours) OR Statistics 405: Statistical Methods (3 hours) or PSY 542 Statistical Methods in Behavioral Science
- Human Ecology 551: Thesis (6 hours) OR Human Ecology 506: Multi-quarter project (6 hours)
- Concentration requirements
- Students must select a concentration area with Family and Consumer Sciences. The number of required concentration courses will depend on the degree plan selected by the student, as follows:
- Thesis option - minimum of 12 hours of concentration courses
- Non-Thesis (1 quarter project) option: minimum of 15 hours of concentration courses
- Students will select the concentration courses under consultation with their advisor
- Elective courses
- In order to fulfill the remaining credit hours, students may elect to take additional courses within their concentration or take courses outside their concentration with the following restrictions:
- Thesis option: maximum of 3 hours counted toward degree plan
- Non-thesis option: maximum of 12 hours counted toward degree plan
- Students enrolled in the Family and Child Development concentration may choose elective courses from within the School of Human Ecology (HEC, MCS, FNU) and/or relevant graduate-level courses from outside Human Ecology (i.e., PSYC, COUN, SOC)
- Students enrolled in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education concentration may choose elective courses from within the School of Human Ecology (HEC, MCS, FNU, FCS) and/or relevant graduate-level courses in the College of Education
- Students enrolled in the Consumer Science concentration may choose electives from within the School of Human Ecology (FCS, HEC, FNU) and/or relevant courses from outside Human Ecology (i.e., MKTG, PSYC, MGMT)
- All graduate students must acquire approval of their electives from their advisory committee before enrolling the courses
Admission Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in human ecology or related field from an accredited university
- 2.75 GPA overall or on last 60 hours
- Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination
