Greetings from Dean Napper

Stan Napper

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the College of Engineering and Science. We are unwavering in our commitment to build the best engineers and scientists for tomorrow and continue to work hard every day to achieve that goal. The Integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education Research Center remains the only one of its kind in Louisiana, and is equal in scope and stature to our other internationally recognized research centers. In addition to our award-winning programs such as TechSTEP, Cyber Discovery camp for high school teachers and students and outreach programs, Living with the Lab freshman projects, elective entrepreneurship courses, and innovative, specialized programs like Biomedical Engineering and Nanosystems Engineering, Louisiana Tech is leading the way in innovative education. We have two of the first National Academy Grand Challenge Scholars in the United States, another NSF CAREER award for a professor in our college AND our student Eco-marathon team set a north American record for high mileage in the Shell Eco-marathon Urban Car competition with 646.7 miles per gallon! Our student concrete canoe and steel bridge teams also won their regional competitions.

We also offer outstanding interdisciplinary graduate programs at the masters and doctoral level and graduated 23 Ph.D. students during 20010-11. Research expenditures have grown to over $16M annually, which is over $250,000 per faculty member. Our rate of invention (Reports of Invention per $10M in research expenditures) is over three times the national average.

Not content to stop here, we are also planning to build a new Integrated Engineering and Science Education Building, with an estimated 60,000 square feet of usable space. The primary purpose of the new building will be to provide an active, integrated learning environment for first and second year engineering, mathematics, chemistry and physics education. As Louisiana Tech’s new Enterprise Campus is being developed, a location for the new IESE Building has been reserved, in close proximity to Bogard and Nethken Halls. This new building will also help us attract, retain, and train the BEST engineering and science students, so that we can CONTINUE to Build Engineers and Scientists for Tomorrow.

Please walk through these web pages to learn more, or better yet, walk through our halls and labs to see first-hand how we are doing. I hope you will enjoy learning about our accomplishments and will stay tuned to see what the future holds for the College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech University. You may contact my office at (318) 257-4647 or via email at san@latech.edu.

Sincerely,

Stan A. Napper, Ph.D.
